A beautiful home rebuilt after the devastating Victorian 2009 bushfires has been awarded the highest accolade at the recent Building Designers Association of Victoria's annual awards night.
On May 5 2011 Bluescope Steel won the Insurance Council of Australia Resilience Award Competition with an innovative home design, by Caroline Pidcock of Pidcock Architects, aimed at preparing Australian communities for extreme weather conditions and assist disaster affected families to remain in their own homes post-disaster. Queensland, the state of floods and cyclones that devastated property, has become Australia's laboratory for sustainable building, for creating resilient homes, offices and structures in the face of climatic volatility.
Building on knowledge gained from assisting disaster-affected communities in the United States, environmental organisation Green Cross Australia will host a state version of the Build It Back Green website to help Victorians rebuild sustainably after natural disasters. The Herald Sun reports.

Build It Back Green is a Green Cross Australia initiative developed with the Green Building Council of Australia as a result of the Victorian bushfires. It takes inspiration from the efforts to rebuild New Orleans as a more resilient city - and one which will contribute less greenhouse gas emissions. Build it Back Green centres reconstruction around sustainability and community resilience, making us better able to survive extreme weather when it comes. We are at the beginning of enormous change. Build it Back Green is how we can adapt to our new climate while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing dangerous climate change.

Build It Back Green supported by the Green Building Council of Australia, is a new global movement which recognises that scientific predictions of more intense severe weather are becoming a reality. Each major event offers the opportunity to break the greenhouse emissions cycle if we rebuild with a reduced carbon footprint. This website has been designed to help Victorian communities recovering from the Black Saturday bushfires to build their homes back in an affordable and sustainable manner.
