Good news stories about rebuilding green
Safe and sustainable rebuilding is increasingly in the news as it becomes a priority in the minds of ordinary Australians. The following selection of good news stories are about sustainability, resilience and rebuilding green.
BNet: Building back green
In early 2009, bushfires swept across Victoria, devastating 78 communities and 400,000 hectares of land. A total of 173 people lost their lives. The devastation resulted in 2,029 homes destroyed, along with hundreds of businesses, five schools and kindergartens, three sporting clubs and numerous other buildings. In the wake of Black Saturday, communities across Victoria were inundated by a national outpouring of support. These communities have been swift in organising and identifying their needs and what the future of their communities might look like. They are supported by a range of organisations and projects that hope to assist in building back these resilient communities. Build it Back Green (BIBG) is one such project that aims to assist efforts across Flowerdale and surrounding regions to build back a sustainable community.

The massive rebuild facing Christchurch in the wake of the earthquake presents a unique opportunity for the city to lead New Zealand in sustainable building practices, says the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC). "The recovery effort following a disaster is a crucial time; it's a chance for communities to be at the heart of planning, creating homes and buildings that meet social, environmental and economic needs," says Alex Cutler, CEO of the NZGBC.
Global Green: Celebrating the completion and opening of first New Orleans model green school

Green Building Council of Australia: Build It Back Green
'Build it back Green' is a green initiative pioneered by Green Cross Australia that proposes rebuilding homes, schools and buildings in effected by the Victorian bushfires sustainably through great design, materials, appliances and renewable energy sources. The GBCA is supporting Green Cross Australia in pioneering this initiative.
Fran Kelly's Radio National Breakfast: Build It Back Green
Flowerdale was described as the 'forgotten town' of Victoria's horrendous bushfires last February, where a handful of brave locals saved their pub, general store, community hall and primary school. While it was one of the hardest hit towns in the Black Saturday blaze, Flowerdale was also the first to start thinking very practically about how to re-invent itself. With more than 500 people left homeless, locals decided that they wanted to make the reborn Flowerdale a model for sustainable building and community.
NY Times: Four Years Later, New Orleans' Green Makeover
After Hurricane Katrina flattened New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005, the city emerged as an inadvertent symbol of global warming, the first American victim of climate change. More than 200,000 homes were destroyed during the Category 5 hurricane. Sustainable-development groups like the international nonprofit Global Green as well as earth-friendly celebrities like Brad Pitt descended on New Orleans, determined not just to build the city back but to build it back green. "It's going to come back," says Matt Petersen, the president of Global Green USA. "But we want to build it better than it was before."
